U.S. President Donald Trump has advocated for a $1 billion reduction in trade deficit between China and the United States. Mr Trump noted in a tweet Wednesday 7th March 2018 that the relationship between the two countries have been very good but called for action on the trade imbalance.

“China has been asked to develop a plan for the year of a One Billion Dollar reduction in their massive Trade Deficit with the United States’, Trump tweeted. “Our relationship with China has been a very good one, and we look forward to seeing what ideas they come back with. We must act soon!”

According to Politico, the deficit between Chinese goods imported to the U.S. and American goods exported to China reached $375.2 billion in 2017 – an 8 percent jump from $347 billion in 2016.

In January the U.S. trade deficit rose 5 percent to $56.6 billion overall which makes it the highest monthly level since October 2008, Politico reported. President Trump has linked the deficits to what he called “bad policies”.

Some reports say the Trump administration would crack down on Chinese investments and import tariffs on its imports over its alleged theft of intellectual property.
